Broncos | Hillman carrying a football everywhere at practice

Denver Broncos second-year RB Ronnie Hillman saw his role diminished in practice today. He worked behind rookie Montee Ball for the first time all offseason after fumbling in back-to-back weeks of the preseason. Hillman was seen carrying a football with him everywhere as a reminder of how critical ball security is.

Footballguys View: Hillman needs to hang onto the rock if he wants to see the field. He was running hard against the Rams before losing a fumble that was stripped away as he went to the ground. Hillman is the most explosive back on the roster but will see his role marginalized until he proves he won’t fumble. The Broncos will use a RBBC this year featuring Ball, Hillman, and veteran Knowshon Moreno.

Broncos | Wes Welker back at practice, looking good

Denver Broncos WR Wes Welker was back to practice today out at Dove Valley after missing some time due to an ankle injury. Welker was reportedly making crisp cuts and showing smooth acceleration.

Footballguys View: The Broncos are being cautious with Welker as he works through this injury. He missed the week three preseason game and may not play in the fourth preseason game either. Welker has built strong chemistry with QB Peyton Manning during training camp and could catch 90 passes in this offense.

Broncos | Montee Ball with the first-team

The Denver Broncos resumed practice today with rookie Montee Ball (Wisconsin) as the first-team running back. Ronnie Hillman had been starting and getting a majority of the first-team reps this offseason but two fumbles this preseason have crushed his hopes of starting for the time being. The team is likely to use a RBBC featuring Ball, Hillman, and veteran Knowshon Moreno in 2013. Head coach John Fox did caution not to read too much into the pecking order at this time. “It’s just practice.” Fox said.

Footballguys View: John Fox has a long history with using some form of RBBC. Ball has a nose for the end zone and should be the team’s primary back when they’re close to paydirt. Hillman is the most explosive and can be a big play option if he hangs onto the ball. Moreno is the best in pass protection and should see plenty of time in the hurry up offense. Overall this continues to be a mess for fantasy owners to figure out.
