Browns | Josh Gordon being reinstated

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon is being reinstated by the NFL conditionally, according to a source. He will be suspended for the first four games of the season.

Footballguys View: A huge win for the Browns here. The team has already stated they would welcome Gordon back with open arms. New head coach Hue Jackson is giving everyone a clean slate, and Gordon will certainly help the entire offense. He’s one of the most naturally talented players at his position, but staying out of trouble and off the suspended list has been difficult during his pro career. The Browns QB situation isn’t great, but Gordon should perform like a WR3 with WR1 upside for fantasy owners when he returns. He’s going off the board at WR53 (11.06) right now in 12-team PPR leagues, but that should rise with this news.

Jets | Todd Bowles won’t be involved in offense

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles will not be heavily involved in the offense despite uncertainty at the quarterback position. ‘I know what’s going on and I trust Chan completely. I know the plays we run and I know what everybody is supposed to do, right or wrong. I understand busted assignments and things like that. I’m up to speed because I’ve been in the offense a year as well.’

Footballguys View: Gailey is one of the most experienced coaches in the game, so trusting him makes a lot of sense. We know the team is going to have a creative offense, we just don’t know who the QB will be at this time. With camp looming, it sounds like the Fitzpatrick talks are heating up. Stay tuned.

Raiders | Aldon Smith being investigated

Oakland Raiders LB Aldon Smith will be investigated by the NFL to see if he violated the protocols required of a suspended player seeking reinstatement to the league after his violation of the substance-abuse policy, according to a league source. An online video circulated that shows an unidentified man and woman talking about a hand-rolled cigarette.

Footballguys View: Smith is currently serving a year-long suspension and will be eligible to apply for reinstatement in September.

Steelers | Le’Veon Bell: ‘I won’t miss games’

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le’Veon Bell, who is appealing a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s drug policy, said ‘I’m not going to miss games, trust me.’ ‘I’m gonna win the appeal…ppl have no idea what happened, but don’t worry…let em hate,’ Bell wrote directly to a fan. ‘When I end up missin no games at all, ppl for sure gonna try to love me again and I’m only ridin with my LOYAL fans!!’

Footballguys View: Let’s just say we’re not as optimistic as Bell in this instance. Bell is supremely talented as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. However, injuries and suspensions have kept him from consistently playing up to his potential. If suspended four games, Bell is still worth taking somewhere around a third- or fourth-round pick in your fantasy drafts. DeAngelo Williams proved last year that he could be an effective starter and a star fantasy RB as the Steelers lead back.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick receives offers

Free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) has received multiple offers to choose between from the New York Jets. The Jets have offered a three-year, $24 million deal with $15 million guaranteed and at least one other offer.

Footballguys View: Finally! With training camp drawing near, the two sides should be able to come to an agreement. Fitzpatrick can step in and compete for the starting job even though he’s missed the entire offseason with the team. Geno Smith would be his primary competition as rookie Christian Hackenberg is seen as the team’s QB of the future.

NFL | Peyton Manning cleared by NFL

Former Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning was cleared Monday, July 25, following a seven-month investigation that found no credible evidence he used human growth hormone or violated the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy, according to sources.

Footballguys View: Manning’s legacy as one of the greatest QBs of all time is insured with this investigation wrapped up. We saw his game fall off over the last year and a half, but Manning was able to become the first QB to ever win a Super Bowl with more than one team (Colts, Broncos).

Bills | Sammy Watkins running full speed

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) said he is sprinting at 100%, and he’s doing cuts, but certain things aren’t at full speed. Watkins said that he’s not mentally comfortable making speed cuts to the left off of his surgically repaired foot, but he expects that to be the final hurdle in his rehab. Watkins isn’t sure exactly what he’ll be allowed to do after he reports to camp, but he’s anticipating a limited workload.
