The Philadelphia Eagles acquired RB Darren Sproles from the New Orleans Saints for an undisclosed package.
Footballguys View: This will be interesting to watch, though the fantasy implications may not be near as great as the real football impact. First, this is a bit of a hit on Shady McCoy’s value as Sproles will be on the field in place of him off and on. McCoy doesn’t drop precipitously though – he’ll still be a top five fantasy RB. Sproles had one incredibly good season in New Orleans (mostly in PPR leagues) with 87 catches and then two very middling seasons as the Saints began using him much differently. The question here is, how will Chip Kelly use him and how often? It seems as though you have the chance to have him on the field WITH McCoy, as a slot receiver perhaps. But you also have (at this time) Jeremy Maclin, Riley Cooper and Desean Jackson to keep busy. Right now, Sproles’ fantasy value remains up in the air. Taking a stab at it, you might use him as am RB 3 in a PPR league or a RB4 -or worse – in a standard league. He might fill out a flex spot but it seems as though his impact will be hampered by the many mouths to feed. he could have his big games but you will also see some stretches where he does very little. That makes his situation volatile in this offense, though it seems like a solid fit from a pure football standpoint.
For the Saints, this leaves Pierre Thomas and Mark Ingram as the main backs, with Travaris Cadet and Khiry Robinson as potential Sproles replacements. Cadet had a brutal drop in the playoffs and Robinson had been coming on before that, so we give the edge to Robinson, who is much faster than you expect a guy his size to be.
