The New York Jets are expected to use RB Bilal Powell as the featured back the next two weeks while they bring RB Chris Ivory (hamstring) and suspended RB Mike Goodson are brought back slowly. Running back coach Anthony Lynn said Powell can be used in most situations. ‘He’s always had a skill set that can cover – between the tackles, outside the tackles, receiving skills, blocking skills. He has a complete skill set, and that allows him to stay on the field. Even if he’s not the feature back he would be on the field a lot,’ Lynn said. Powell said he entered the season more prepared which has allowed him to play faster and be more comfortable.
Footballguys View: Powell was already getting a large chunk of carries, including some key ones late in both of the last two games. He is a threat catching the ball and solid pass protector as well. The Jets need a firm run game to help rookie quarterback Geno Smith and while Powell isn’t anything special, he’s been consistent this season. Considering Ivory’s history of injuries and the fact that we don’t know what kind of shape Goodson is in, Powell could be productive for a lot of the season.
