New York Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said QB Geno Smith needs to work on some things but believes he is close to being game ready. ‘I think Geno’s close,’ Mornhinweg said. ‘I don’t think he’s there yet. But he’s close to being able to get into a game and function at a high level. So our whole challenge – and his challenge – is that first preseason game. Now let’s get to a point where you can function at a high level.’ Mornhinweg said Smith is farther along than most rookie quarterbacks and can get away with some mechanical flaws because of his athleticism. Mornhinweg would not comment on if the team would use Smith in some way if he does not win the starting job.
