New York Jets QB Geno Smith has outperformed QB Mark Sanchez during the first week of training camp but the competition is believed to be fairly even because of Sanchez’s experience. Smith and Sanchez are expected to split reps evenly with the first-team offense during the team’s scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 3. Smith said he believes the scrimmage will give him a chance to show the coaches what he can do.
Footballguys View: If Smith and Sanchez are even now, Smith will have to get worse to lose the job because there’s no reason for the Jets to slow his development by putting Sanchez on the field when the two are close. Look for Smith to win the job, which is good for the offense. It would also add another quarterback that could be a solid waiver wire pickup early in the season, assuming the Jets also install some read option looks in the running game.
