Lions | Kerryon Johnson is cool with D’Andre Swift selection

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson is pleased with the selection of RB D’Andre Swift in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. ‘Look, I knew we were going to draft a running back eventually. I think we got, in my opinion, definitely one of the top two (in the draft). I love having a running back. I love winning games and I think he can help us do that, so I wasn’t tripping at all,’ Johnson said during a Wednesday, June 10, Zoom call with reporters. ‘But just having multiple running backs that are capable of running the ball at an efficient level, whether the style is different or the style is the same, it just takes the stress off one another,’ Johnson added. ‘This is going to be his (Swift’s) first (season) in the league. This is going to be my third. We’re all going to have the help of Bo (Scarbrough) and Ty (Johnson) and all those other guys. All our running backs before Huntley and Swift came all started in an NFL game. All of us started multiple (games), so that’s something not a lot of teams can say. We got a lot of guys who know how to play, we got a lot of guys who have played and I think we’ll all get along just fine.’

Footballguys View: Johnson may be cool with it now but how will he feel if/when the rookie takes the starting job? Swift has a three-down skill set and was arguably the best running back in the 2020 NFL draft. He can be a solid starter at least if not a star at the pro level. Johnson has skill but injuries and inconsistencies have prevented him from producing at the expected level. We’ll see this battle shake out in training camp.
