The National Football League is currently investigating whether the Carolina Panthers properly followed concussion protocol with QB Cam Newton during the NFC Wild Card game against the New Orleans Saints Sunday, Jan. 7. Newton was poked in the eye and also suffered a knee injury after taking a hit to the head from DT David Onyemata. A league source said the injured knee was a contributing factor to Newton staggering to the ground and having difficulty maintaining his balance. He was taken to the team’s blue medical tent on the sidelines for evaluation but was not sent to the locker room, as the league’s new rules require.
