New England Patriots QB Cam Newton was not guaranteed the starting job, according to a source Monday, June 29. The job will go to the best quarterback in training camp and the competition will include Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer.

Footballguys View: That sounds about right. Newton is the most talented quarterback on the roster, by far, if he’s healthy. Stidham had first-round tools at Auburn but a poor senior season caused him to fall to the fourth round of the 2019 NFL draft. Hoyer is a journeyman veteran with plenty of starting experience but little upside. The Patriots will likely go with Newton as it should be clear he’s the best option in training camp.
