One anonymous general manager said that Baltimore Ravens WR Torrey Smith is ‘a bit of a one-trick pony (as a downfield threat).’ Of the 130 passes that were thrown to Smith last year, 26 percent went over 20 yards in the air, and he led all NFL players in the most targets and routes run on passes that traveled over 20 yards. In 2013, he had only 39 catches on throws that went 10 yards or less, which ranked him 71st among receivers in the league. WR Steve Smith’s presence in the offense could limit opposing defenses from bracketing their coverages on Smith all game long. Also, offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak is known for not taking too many downfield shots.
Footballguys View: Smith was known as a deep threat when he came out of college, and it’s been wise for the Ravens to use him in the best way. We’ll see if he can flourish in the Kubiak system in 2014. Smith has a current ADP of WR28 (6.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.
