Steelers | Pittsburgh tight ends weren’t cutting it

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Vance McDonald was acquired because fellow TEs Jesse James and Xavier Grimble were ‘not consistently varsity enough,’ in the words of head coach Mike Tomlin. Tomlin did make it clear that McDonald will not be crowned the started right away and will need to compete for that job.

Footballguys View: Not varsity enough? Somebody needs to make a t-shirt of that slogan. McDonald has a high rate of drops and has been banged up quite a bit as a pro. If he’s healthy and plays with better concentration then McDonald should have no problem overtaking James for the top job.
