Giants | Injury leaves door open for No. 3 safety job

New York Giants SS Tyler Sash (hamstring) was considered the favorite for the No. 3 safety job during minicamp, but a hamstring injury throughout camp hampered him. That opened the door for FS Stevie Brown and FS Will Hill, and both impressed safeties coach Dave Merritt. However, Sash has the most experience, and is still believed to be the favorite.

Giants | Deon Grant feels he’ll be re-signed

Free-agent FS Deon Grant (Giants) has not retired, and he feels he will be re-signed by the New York Giants sometime during training camp. ‘This is the first time in three or four years – and this was the longest one – that I can say I came out completely healthy,’ Grant said. ‘I revamped everything and my body feels wonderful right now.’

Falcons | Akeem Dent might start in Week 1

The chances for LB Akeem Dent to start in Week 1 as the middle linebacker increased dramatically when LB Lofa Tatupu (pectoral) suffered an injury lifting weights. Tatupu will meet with a specialist, and it’s uncertain how much time he’ll miss just yet. However, he is likely to miss the start of training camp at the least.

Browns | Backup RB battle to be heated

The only real competition at the running back position for the Cleveland Browns is to determine who will become the primary backup to RB Trent Richardson. The team likely will favor whoever proves to be the best receiving threat and pass protector, especially on third down. Contributions on special teams might be a deciding factor, too. Head coach Pat Shurmur said RBs Montario Hardesty and Brandon Jackson would both play this year, but it is uncertain who will have a more prominent role. RB Chris Ogbonnaya is also in the mix, and his ability on special teams will help his cause should one of the others falter or suffer injury.
