New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is considering a joint practice in Florida with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers around the road preseason game with the Bucs Aug. 24. The reasoning might be conditioning-based, as the Patriots open the regular season Sept. 9 against the Tennessee Titans in Nashville. The game-time temperature in the Titans’ past three home openers have been 76 degrees (54 percent humidity), 77 degrees (45 percent humidity) and 77 degrees (83 percent humidity).

The New England Patriots might consider turning over the second preseason game to QBs Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett for the preseason game Aug. 20 against the Philadelphia Eagles. It is a nationally-televised game, which would give the team a chance to show the rest of the NFL what they have and to generate some interest in Hoyer or Mallett for a possible deal.

New England Patriots LB Dont’a Hightower remains unsigned, and he might be waiting to see what happens with players like Cleveland Browns QB Brandon Weeden. The hold-up with Weeden is that he is looking for a guaranteed four-year contract. Weeden was selected 22nd overall, while Hightower was picked 25th overall.

New England Patriots LB Bobby Carpenter saw plenty of reps during offseason workouts, especially with LB Brandon Spikes (knee) absent as he recovers from injury. Carpenter can play both outside spots in a 4-3 defensive scheme. With LB Jerod Mayo entrenched as the weak-side linebacker, Carpenter will be in the mix for the strong-side job. His biggest competition will be LB Dont’a Hightower. Carpenter is expected to see plenty of playing time in coverage, regardless if he starts.

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis feels the team is a Super Bowl contender, and he isn’t afraid to voice his opinion. ‘I don’t want to sound too cocky, but I think we have the potential,’ Davis said. ‘I think we have a lot of potential and I’m not wrong for saying that because of the talent we have. I can’t that we’re going to win the Super Bowl. All I can say is that I strongly believe that we have the team to get to that point. It makes me excited because I know what we have going forward.’
