Green Bay Packers WR Randall Cobb, a second-year pro, has had an eye-catching start to training camp. If he keeps it up, it may be impossible for the Packers to keep him off of the field even though he is going to continue as the team’s primary return man. Early in training camp, Cobb has made more big plays and has been used a variety of ways – more so than any of the team’s other receivers. He has had several big receptions in training camp, using his speed to blow past defenders.

Texans | Brandon Harris receives praise

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said Sunday, July 29, that CB Brandon Harris has looked like a totally different player since playing sparingly in his rookie season last year. ‘The last five days of OTAs (organized team activities) and the first couple days of camp, Brandon has been a little different player,’ Kubiak said. ‘Usually, guys will make a big jump from year one to two, so we’ll see.’

Texans | Whitney Mercilus seeing extra reps

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said Sunday, July 29, he is excited to see LB Whitney Mercilus in the team’s first padded practice scheduled for Monday, July 30. Mercilus has been getting extra reps with LB Connor Barwin sitting out of the indoor portions of practice in training camp. ‘He’s got the speed and all those things that we know he has. Now, we’ll see his competitive nature,’ Kubiak said.

Our View: Mercilus is going to help the Texans fill the void left by Mario Williams departure. He can get after the QB because of his strength, length, and understanding of leverage.

Texans | Lestar Jean practices as starter

Houston Texans WR Lestar Jean practiced as a starter Sunday, July 29, with WR Andre Johnson (groin) sidelined. The Florida Atlantic University product also did so during organized team activities (OTAs) when Johnson was out with a knee ailment. ‘He’s got a ways to go,’ head coach Gary Kubiak said. ‘I love his work habits. I love how he goes about his business. He’s got all the tools: the size, he can run, he’s smart. Lestar has just got to become a pro. Every day, he just has to be consistent and make a play. He had a couple chances to make plays this morning that he needs to make. I’m not being hard on him. That’s just the way it is.’
