Vikings | Christian Ponder has better understanding of offense

Minnesota Vikings second-year QB Christian Ponder has a much greater working knowledge of the Vikings’ system than he did a year ago, according to offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave. The Vikings are going to continue to ramp up Ponder and the entire offense based upon what it shows they can handle. ‘We definitely want to get good at some things and not spread any of our players too thin with too much volume,’ Musgrave said. Ponder had a good day of training camp Friday, July 27, according to Musgrave.

Vikings | Jerome Simpson working his way into new system

Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said WR Jerome Simpson has a good working knowledge of the team’s offense, but he still has to think and react at times. Musgrave believes the more reps Simpson receives the more he will be able to come out of the huddle and go full speed. ‘He brings a lot to the table. He really does. There’s another young player on our offense that really, we feel, can only get better,’ Musgrave noted on his new receiver. Musgrave went on to say Simpson’s speed gives them some new options, too, because he has ‘terrific juice down the field.’

Vikings | Will look to use multiple-tight end sets

Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said the team is excited to create some plays to utilize both TEs Kyle Rudolph and John Carlson on the field at the same time this year. Musgrave said the two tight ends complement each other and they are interchangeable within the offense. ‘One time we may have one guy in the backfield, both on the line of scrimmage, or even both of them split outside of corresponding wide receivers, they have that much versatility,’ Musgrave stated.

Colts | Andrew Luck is a quick study

Indianapolis Colts rookie QB Andrew Luck is going to receive the majority of the reps with the first-string offense, according to offensive coordinator Bruce Arians. ‘The only way you learn is to play. He’s going to be our guy and he’s going to get the majority of the reps. The thing we have to watch is not running everybody else into the ground with him,’ Arians said.

Colts | Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen could play multiple roles

Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said the Colts will play two or three tight ends this year. He is looking for rookies Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen to get on the field and compete to find a role because the tight ends could be used at wide receiver, running back and fullback. Arians said the team’s tight ends are all very talented and can be used in a lot of different roles. ‘So I like to think back to a Kenny Dilger or a Marcus Pollard, that type of skill set where we can split them out and have them in the backfield and see how the other guys come in and keep growing. So the sky’s the limit for their ability,’ Arians said of the teams’ rookie tight ends.

Colts | Andrew Luck feels sense of urgency

Indianapolis Colts rookie QB Andrew Luck said he is ‘getting there’ when it comes to knowing the team’s playbook. ‘I think you never can know enough. Practice reps will definitely help. Like I said earlier, I hope to just continue to improve playbook-wise every day,’ Luck said. Luck said with the start of training camp he is putting a little more pressure on himself to make sure he understands the nuances of the game and the playbook because there is now a sense of urgency with games beginning soon.
