NFL fantasy football: John Skelton named Cardinals starter
Finally, our long national nightmare is over – John Skelton will be the Arizona Cardinals starting quarterback in Week 1. That answers the only real question surrounding the QB competition in the desert; namely, what would it mean for Larry Fitzgerald. After watching that duo duke it out in the preseason, it was plain to see that there would be little to no fantasy draft value there. But with Skelton besting Kevin Kolb, it adds a little something extra to Fitz’s value. The perennial fantasy monster had another big year in 2011, but his best weeks came with Skelton under center. Eagles | Release Mike Kafka
Updating a previous report, the Philadelphia Eagles released QB Mike Kafka after not being able to find a trade partner Friday, Aug. 31.
Our View: Kafka was a hot prospect for the team early in his career, but the fourth-round pick’s development stalled out and third year’s third-round pick Nick Foles flew past him on the depth chart. That Trent Edwards also beat out Kafka shows you why no team offered the Eagles anything in a trade.

Unexpected (and expected): Rex Ryan is confident
Don’t look so surprised. That’s right, the next time the toe meets the leather in an NFL game, it will be for real! But before we take some time to look forward to the upcoming NFL season (and be sure to check out our experts picks), it’s time to look back at the weird, wild and just plain wacky from Week 4 of the NFL preseason.

Steelers | Seven players released
The Pittsburgh Steelers have released QB Jerrod Johnson, OT Trai Essex, WR Derrick Williams, FS DaMon Cromartie-Smith, WR David Gilreath, WR Marquis Maze and WR Toney Clemons.
Our View: Clemons and Maze are both practice squad candidates. Maze is a special teams/return man/slot receiver, and Clemons is a raw, but talented receiver. The Steelers may carry only four wide receivers into the regular season.
