Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur said he is confident QB Brandon Weeden is ready for the start of the regular season. Weeden has struggled in the preseason, completing just 49 percent of his passes with no touchdowns and one interception for a 59.7 passer rating. He has been sacked four times and lost three fumbles. ‘I think he’s had an outstanding camp,’ Shurmur said. ‘I thought he had an outstanding offseason. Really, he’s kind of improved every day. For a guy that’s going through this for the first time as a pro, I think he’s very ready.’

Eagles | Michael Vick still sore

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick (ribs) took part in practice Tuesday, Aug. 28, still feeling the effects of a shot he took to the ribs in a preseason game. ‘Still sore,’ Vick said. ‘Feels a lot better … Working through it.’ Vick will be available for Week 1, and he will wear a new Kevlar flak jacket for the game designed to cover more of his torso than his previous model.

Panthers | No staph infection for Steve Smith

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said WR Steve Smith (foot) remains unable to put weight on his foot; however, Smith is doing much better. The lingering nature of the condition has created speculation that Smith may have had a staph infection. A team source, however, indicates that Smith did not have a staph infection.
