Cardinals | Jonathan Cooper is a rarity

Arizona Cardinals OG Jonathan Cooper is the first guard taken in the top eight of the NFL Draft since 1982, when future Hall of Famer Mike Munchak was picked by the Houston Oilers with the eighth overall selection. Cooper is the first guard selected within the top 10 since University of Colorado OG Chris Naeole was taken with the 10th pick in the 1997 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. It is also just the second time the Cardinals have used their first-round selection on an offensive guard.

Eagles | Chip Kelly excited about pick

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly completed his first day of picks Thursday, April 25, in his first NFL Draft as head coach. The team added OT Lane Johnson with the fourth overall selection. ‘We felt he was the most athletic tackle that we had seen. We had him in, went down and worked him out privately, then had him in for a visit just a little while ago. (He has) a huge upside,’ Kelly said. ‘He hasn’t played a ton of offensive tackle, but he has played the right side and the left side, so he does have experience at both sides.’

Giants | Happy with Justin Pugh

New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese said Thursday, April 25, that OT Justin Pugh was the team’s highest-rated player remaining on their draft board when they selected him No. 19 overall in the 2013 NFL Draft. ‘We are really happy to get him,’ head coach Tom Coughlin said. ‘I have been asked, ‘Do you think it is time for you to take a hard look at your offensive line in terms of young talent?’ Well, there always is. Some years it is just not available to you. So we do feel like the addition of some young talented players in our offensive line is going to help us going forward in the future.’

Jets | Might use more 4-3 fronts

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan and defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman might call for more 4-3 defensive fronts following the selection of DT Sheldon Richardson in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. The team has the makings of a formidable front with Richardson, DLs Muhammad Wilkerson, Quinton Coples and NT Kenrick Ellis. The team also signed NT Antonio Garay during the offseason.
