Chargers | Expecting a bounce back year from QB Rivers

In an interview on The Audible, Chargers beat writer Michael Gehlken (San Diego Union-Tribune) said that 2013 would be “some measure of a bounce back year for Philip Rivers.” Mike McCoy is the team’s new head coach and is known as someone who can get the most out of the players under him.

Our View: We like Rivers as a late round QB to grab in your fantasy leagues. The team has upgraded the offensive line, added weapons like WR Keenan Allen and RB Danny Woodhead, plus they’re getting potential star WR Vincent Brown back from the ankle injury that cost him the entire 2012 season. Rivers current ADP is QB19 and he’s coming off the board at 12.11 in 12 team fantasy leagues.

Chargers | Rookie WR Allen drawing Reggie Wayne comparisons

During an interview on The Audible, Chargers beat writer Michael Gehlken (San Diego Union-Tribune) says that rookie WR Keenan Allen (California) has been drawing some Reggie Wayne (Colts) comparisons at Chargers camp. Gehlken also said Allen’s smoothness and route running immediately stand out.

Our View: Allen could be a steal for the Chargers if he can stay healthy and play up to his potential. He has elite talent but fell to the third-round in the 2013 NFL draft largely due to a PCL injury that slowed him during the pre-draft process. Allen could be a quality WR2 for the Chargers in the near future but this season may have limited opportunity behind guys like Vincent Brown, Danario Alexander, Eddie Royal, and Malcom Floyd.

Buccaneers | Michael Smith favored over rookie Mike James

The Buccaneers have an interesting battle at the backup RB position behind starter Doug Martin. Some have penciled in rookie Mike James (Miami) as the handcuff but that may not be the case. Scott Reynolds, from Pewter Report Magazine, tells Cecil Lammey that second-year RB Michael Smith has been getting some first-team work, nickel offense, and third-and-long reps with the first team this offseason. James has barely been used and is getting fewer reps than 5’5″ Matt Brown at this time.

Our View: An interesting situation for fantasy owners to monitor here. Doug Martin doesn’t have durability problems but if you spend a high pick on him then handcuffing a guy like Smith in the last round makes sense (if you have a deep bench). Smith is an incredibly fast back who can cut crisply at speed. The team would likely use FB Brian Leonard a bit more if Martin went down.

Cowboys | Travis Frederick terms

Dallas Cowboys C Travis Frederick reportedly received a $3.38 million signing bonus for his five-year contract. Frederick was the 31st overall pick in the NFL Draft this year. Frederick has run with the first-team offense all offseason and will compete with C Phil Costa. All signs point to Frederick starting in his rookie season.
