Tennessee Titans LB Colin McCarthy (ankle, concussion) was limited for much of the recent organized team activities (OTAs), but he is now ready to go for training camp. ‘He’s healthy. He looks good,’ head coach Mike Munchak said Wednesday, July 24. McCarthy is expected to battle LB Moise Fokou for the bulk of the playing time at middle linebacker. Fokou spent a majority of the OTAs with the first-team defense while McCarthy was out recovering from ankle surgery and a concussion.

The Washington Redskins coaching staff had been hoping DL Adam Carriker (quadriceps) would compete with DL Jarvis Jenkins for playing time at left end, but Carriker will now have surgery on his quadriceps Thursday, July 25, and is out indefinitely.

Giants | Terrell Thomas is wild card
New York Giants CB Terrell Thomas (knee) is trying to make his third comeback from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, and he can help at either cornerback, in the slot and even perhaps as a third safety when healthy. The return of Thomas to his pre-injury form might make the difference between a solid secondary and a good one.

Giants | Corey Webster still considered top CB
New York Giants CB Corey Webster (hand) is still considered the team’s top cornerback, but the team needs a big-time bounce back season. He allowed eight touchdown receptions last season, tied for second-most among cornerbacks, according to ProFootballFocus.com.

Chiefs | Eric Kush gained valuable experience
Kansas City Chiefs C Eric Kush worked as the temporary starting center for three days during rookie camp, getting all of the practice snaps. He will work behind C Rodney Hudson, so he understands the need to make the most of his time now. ‘In a situation like this it is absolutely critical that you put your best foot forward because in a couple of weeks here there will be a lot of us who are not here anymore,’ Kush said. ‘You don’t want to be one of those guys, so you keep giving your best effort every day.’

Chiefs | Ricky Stanzi’s future cloudy
Kansas City Chiefs QB Ricky Stanzi is the only quarterback on the team’s roster not acquired by new head coach Andy Reid and new general manager John Dorsey, and he finds himself fighting for a roster spot. QB Alex Smith is the unquestioned starter, and QB Chase Daniel is the top backup. That leaves Stanzi and QB Tyler Bray fighting for the No. 3 job. ‘We’re splitting reps. I’m just really worried about the reps I got. It’s been nice to be out here a couple of days early just to refresh with the playbook and kind of get up to speed with the guys, especially with the receivers.’
Footballguys View: Stanzi has a strong arm but struggles with accuracy. Bray has a stronger arm but struggles with accuracy as well. We’ll see if Bray can struggle less and thus stick around on the final roster or the practice squad.

Chargers | D.J. Smith avoids PUP
San Diego Chargers LB D.J. Smith (knee), who was claimed in April, has not participated in workouts since joining the team. That’s because he has been rehabbing a torn anterior cruciate ligament. However, it appears he will be ready to practice in some capacity during training camp.

Chargers | Marcus Gilchrist to work with first team
San Diego Chargers CB Marcus Gilchrist will continue to see first-team reps at strong safety as long as SS Brandon Taylor (knee) remains on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Chargers | Two land on PUP
The San Diego Chargers placed LB Melvin Ingram (knee) and SS Brandon Taylor (knee) on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list Wednesday, July 24. Ingram suffered his torn anterior cruciate ligament in May, and likely will begin the regular season on PUP, making him ineligible to return for at least the first six weeks. Taylor tore his ACL in December, and had surgery in January. He has a chance to return to practice during training camp, and potentially see action in the preseason.

Browns | Financials for John Greco
The five-year deal signed by Cleveland Browns OT John Greco is worth about $13 million if he is a starter, and just under $3 million in guaranteed money, according to a league source. Without incentives for starting, the deal is worth about $6 million. In the event Greco makes Pro Bowls, the max value of his contract would increase to $14 million.
