Panthers | Want to run balanced offense

Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula made it clear during training camp that he wants to run a balanced offense that takes advantage of all of the team’s talent at the skill positions. The read option may only be a small part of the team’s offense. ‘You can’t just rely on (RB DeAngelo Williams) and (RB Jonathan Stewart), running the football and you can’t just rely on (QB Cam Newton),’ Shula said. ‘We have to spread that out. Hopefully, in doing that, with the guys that we have here personnel wise, we can keep teams off balance and make them understand they’re going to have to account for everybody on every part of the field.’

Packers | Datone Jones works on special teams

Green Bay Packers DE Datone Jones lined up at one of the middle positions on special teams Tuesday, July 30, running down and covering a kickoff. ‘He can run,’ head coach Mike McCarthy said. ‘He’s a major matchup problem. But we’ll work him as a backup. I don’t see that as a primary role for Datone, but he has a unique skill set, and it’s important for our young guys to come in and make sure they’re ready to go on special teams.’

Packers | Johnathan Franklin needs blocking to improve

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy puts a high value on pass protection, so RB Johnathan Franklin needs to improve his blocking if he wants to see more of the field. He has looked impressive running the ball, but he was reportedly overmatched Tuesday, July 30, in practice on a one-on-one drill which called for the running back to block a blitzing linebacker. ‘I felt like the outside linebackers clearly got the best of the running backs today,’ McCarthy said. ‘We were too high. We weren’t sitting down. We didn’t have our head up. So it’ll be good tape to watch. So that’s a drill I’m sure we’ll do again.’

Cowboys | HC happy with Joseph Randle

Dallas Cowboys RB Joseph Randle (thumb) showed well in the team’s scrimmage, and is off to a good start in training camp, according to head coach Jason Garrett. Still, Randle is behind RB Lance Dunbar for the race for the backup job to RB DeMarco Murray, and RB Phillip Tanner has reportedly been more consistent as well.

Arizona Cardinals CB Tyrann Mathieu has looked good early on in training camp, showing off his speed and making plays much to the delight of head coach Bruce Arians. ‘He’s a lovable kid,’ Arians said Tuesday, July 30. ‘(The fans) want him to succeed. We all do. He knows what it takes and he’s got a really good support group.’
