Lions | Teammate praises Ezekiel Ansah

Detroit Lions LB Stephen Tulloch said Monday, July 29, that rookie DL Ezekiel Ansah reminds him of a young DL Javon Kearse. Tulloch played with Kearse during his days with the Tennessee Titans. ‘Ziggy is a freak,’ Tulloch said. ‘He’s a raw player but very instinctive. He can read screens very well. Runs to the ball very well. He’s just a real good athlete.’

Lions | Darius Slay learning on the fly

Detroit Lions CB Darius Slay continues to work with the first-team defense with CB Ron Bartell (shoulder) sidelined. The rookie said Monday, July 29, he has learned a lot while covering WR Calvin Johnson. ‘I’m learning a lot from him,’ Slay said. ‘He’s a big, aggressive receiver, so I have to get my hands on him. I love how he competes. That’s my goal, to compete every time, so I love going against him one-on-one. I’d like to go against him every day, if I could.’

Jaguars | Denard Robinson working in Wildcat

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Denard Robinson was used on three Wildcat plays in practice Monday, July 29. Robinson ran the ball once, handed off to RB Maurice Jones-Drew another time, and completed a pass to WR Mike X. Brown the other time. Robinson reportedly struggled with the Wildcat during organized team activities (OTAs), but head coach Gus Bradley thinks Robinson has the potential to run the trick play. ‘We did it in OTAs and a couple of times he ran the ball and fumbled the ball and he didn’t know how to pitch,’ Bradley said. ‘We’re not going to give up on that. (Offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch)’s philosophy is to get it in the playmaker’s hands and we want to see if he’s a playmaker and the threat he can give us.’

Giants | Hopeful Marvin Austin will step up

New York Giants defensive line coach Robert Nunn is hopeful DL Marvin Austin can step up and make a significant impact in his third year as a pro. ‘He’s been healthy for the first time. He’s never been able to go through a true offseason because of different ailments that he’s had,’ Nunn said Monday, July 29. ‘He’s where he needs to be right now, he just can’t disappear when the pads come on. He knows what he’s got to do, I’ve spoken to him about it, when the pads come on he’s got to produce, when he gets out there under the lights he’s got to produce.’

Giants | Justin Pugh comfortable in new spot

New York Giants OT Justin Pugh has been playing right tackle with the second-team offense during training camp behind OT David Diehl. Pugh played left tackle at the University of Syracuse, but said the move to the other side has been smooth. ‘I feel good about it,’ Pugh said Monday, July 29. ‘I’m feeling comfortable out there and in my set and all the different things. I think it’s just getting in there and learning the playbook, and then getting on the technique and mastering the technique.’ The Giants have most of their linemen take snaps at other positions to increase their versatility.

Colts | Robert Mathis motivated by doubters

Some have openly wondered if Indianapolis Colts DL Robert Mathis can be as effective now that his friend and former teammate DE Dwight Freeney (Broncos) has moved on. The team combined to top 20 sacks as a duo five times. He is now playing with a much younger cast, and he is acting as a mentor, too. ‘There’s kind of an age gap, like 10 years or so,’ Mathis said Monday, July 29. ‘It’s more like big brother-little brother relationship. I just bring them in and show the how Colts football (is).’
