Lions | Looking for more playmakers

The Detroit Lions have 13 wide receivers on their roster heading into training camp, and they’re looking for depth in case injuries strike again at the position. The favorite for the No. 4 job behind WRs Calvin Johnson, Ryan Broyles and Nate Burleson has been WR Patrick Edwards. He is a bit undersized at 5-foot-9, 175 pounds, but impressed during offseason workouts. It appears he and newcomer WR Chaz Schilens will jockey for the No. 4 job, and WRs Kris Durham, Corey Fuller and Michael Spurlock also could factor in.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews feels he can be elite

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews heads into his fourth season, and he understands he has been an ‘average back’ in his first three years. However, he dropped about 10 pounds from his weight last season, and enters training camp at 220 pounds. He is healthy and has big expectations for himself. ‘I think I can be a top-five back,’ Mathews said, ‘and be up with the best of them. I just have to be consistent. That’s the main thing, to be consistent with my play.’
