Browns | Granted permission to interview Josh McDaniels

The Cleveland Browns have been granted permission by the New England Patriots to interview offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

Footballguys View: McDaniels is back in the head coach rumor mill, and he might be the guy the Browns had their eye on when they fired Rob Chudzinski after less than one year as head coach. Bill Belichick had a mostly unsuccessful first stint as a head coach with Cleveland, maybe they think they can get the same kind of second-job success with McDaniels.

Falcons | Roddy White has three or four more years left

Atlanta Falcons WR Roddy White said he would like to play three or four more years as he gets closer to a contract extension. ‘How many more years? I think three or four,” he said. ‘I don’t want to be an ironman like Tony [Gonzalez]. He was blessed to go through his stint in the NFL because 17 seasons is a long time to play football, man. I was thinking if I could just get 10, I’ll be all right.”

Redskins | Considering extension for Mike Shanahan

The Washington Redskins are considering signing head coach Mike Shanahan to a contract extension, according to people with knowledge of the team’s planning. Shanahan has two years left on his remaining contract, and the team is trying to decide if they should approach an extension this offseason or wait to do it when he has one season left. Washington will likely pursue the extension now instead of waiting.

Redskins | To interview Darrell Bevell

The Washington Redskins plan to interview Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell for their head coaching position, according to a source. The Minnesota Vikings are also interested in Bevell as their next head coach.

Footballguys View: Bevell has a long history of being a passing game and offensive mind going back to his time with Brett Favre in Green Bay. He’ll likely get hired riding the wave of offensive coaches getting hired as head coaches in the NFL lately.

Buccaneers | Lovie Smith the head coaching favorite

Former Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith will interview for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ head coaching position, and he’s considered a favorite for the job.

Footballguys View: The somewhat frugal Bucs organization appears to be set on making a safe and uninspired choice. Smith could help the defense firm up, but he’ll need a very strong offensive mind to run things on that side of the ball.

Jaguars | Maurice Jones-Drew still thinks he’s feature back

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew thinks he’s still a featured back as he prepares to test the free-agent market this spring. The Jaguars are willing to match any offer another team gives him, but they’d likely have him back in a role in which he’s sharing carries more than he ever has in the past. Jones-Drew’s 3.4 yards per carry was the worst of his career in 2013. ‘There are some guys that don’t need the offseason. They can just go out there and play ball,’ Jones-Drew said. ‘For me, the offseason is critical. I have to be able to train my body to be able to take the pounding that it takes each week, to be able to recover. I’ve been taking a lot of shots at my legs the last couple of years. I want to be able to get them back in shape and get ready to roll.’

Footballguys View: Jones-Drew is in for a harsh reality check when he hits the market. There’s a good chance that he ends his career as a Jaguar after signing a modest deal this offseason when no one is willing to pay him what he thinks he has earned.

Jaguars | Blaine Gabbert to stay?

The Jacksonville Jaguars appear likely to keep QB Blaine Gabbert for the final year of his contract, unless they draft another quarterback with the third overall pick in next year’s draft. It will be hard for Jacksonville to keep Gabbert if they re-sign QB Chad Henne and draft another quarterback. The Jaguars would like to keep at least one player on the roster who is familiar with the offensive system.
