Jets | Rex Ryan won’t commit to Antonio Cromartie returning

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he hopes CB Antonio Cromartie (hip) can return to his 2012 form, but would not commit to him returning to the team in 2014 due to economics.

Footballguys View: The Jets will save $9.5MM if/when they release Cromartie. He expects to be a cap casualty this offseason. ‘I think I (will be),’ Cromartie said. ‘Just because my cap number is very high. And I had one of the worst seasons of my career this past year. I was banged up. I got hurt in Week 2, but that’s not an excuse. I just had a bad year. That falls heavily on me and no one else.’

Jaguars | Will talk to Chad Henne before free agency

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell said he will reach out to the agent for QB Chad Henne before free agency starts.

Footballguys View: It only makes sense for the team. They’re likely to add a rookie this year, possibly with a premium pick. Adding Teddy Bridgewater (Louisville) could be their best bet. Henne could stick around as veteran insurance.

Jets | Rex Ryan wont commit to Geno Smith as starter

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan would not name QB Geno Smith the starter for Week 1 in 2014, saying it is too early in the off season to make that decision. “With anything, you can’t say anything with any certainty right now because you’re just starting the off season,” he said. “You don’t know who your roster is going to be and things like that. It’s probably not the best thing to say this guy is going to be a starter or this or that. Let’s just let it play out.”

Jets | Likely to address wide receiver at draft

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said the team will likely address the wide receiver position at some point in the draft. “I know it’s a deep draft at receiver,” Ryan said. “Do I anticipate us taking somebody? At some point in the draft, I’m sure we’ll address it.”

Footballguys View: Santonio Holmes is not in the team’s plans. We’ll see the team look for an impact player with a premium pick. Their wide receiver corps isn’t that strong, and a guy like Stephen Hill hasn’t worked out yet. With the 18th overall pick, the Jets could consider using it on Marquise Lee (USC).

Buccaneers | Car Nicks injury update

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith said OG Carl Nicks (foot) has made some progress in recovering from a foot injury. ‘I have had a chance to talk with Carl, he’s excited about the upcoming season,’ Smith said. ‘His rehab is going well. He’s one of the guys that’s through here by daily, is working out getting ready to go. Carl has been a dominant football player in the league for a while and we’ve got to get him back out on the football field and that’s what we’re trying to do.’
