NFL | A.J. McCarron resting his body

Updating a previous item, University of Alabama QB A.J. McCarron (shoulder, toe) decided to rest his body for the Senior Bowl at the advice of his doctors. He dealt with toe, shoulder and hamstring injuries in his senior season at Alabama. McCarron had minor surgery on his toe following the Sugar Bowl. His sore shoulder does not require surgery, but McCarron admitted he’s been fatigued since midseason. McCarron was cleared Tuesday, Jan. 21, for the first time since the Sugar Bowl. ‘My shoulder feels better than it ever has now,’ said McCarron. ‘I’ve been working on my throwing mechanics and my arm is going to be stronger than it’s ever been.’

Lions | OC says Matthew Stafford isn’t broken

New Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi is excited to work with QB Matthew Stafford, and Lombardi insists that Stafford ‘isn’t broken.’ ‘The good news is that he’s not broken, that much is clear’ Lombardi said. ‘There’s an awful amount of talent there. His arm is something to behold. We used to sit in the Saints quarterback room and just marvel at his passes — all the depths, the whole field in play. He really can sling it. That’s a great thing to have.’

Jets | Mark Sanchez may not be out of work for long

One coach of a quarterback-needy team believes New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez (shoulder) wouldn’t be out of a job long if the Jets cut him this offseason. New York would save $8.3 million of the $13.1 million salary cap figure if they release him. ‘We’d take Sanchez,’ the coach said. ‘He’d be the starter as soon as he walked in the door for us.’ Sanchez has been rehabbing his right shoulder in Alabama after having surgery in October.
