Buccaneers | Want to get Jeff Demps in space

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith said he wants to get RB Jeff Demps in space. ‘I said ‘I’ve never had a chance to coach the fastest guy in the NFL,” Smith said. ‘He loves track, but he considers himself a football player. He’s anxious to get started with whatever position we ask him to play, whether it’s running back, receiver, returning kicks.’

Ross Cockrell impressive at Duke’s pro day

Representatives from 23 NFL teams were present for Duke’s pro day on Wednesday, where five players worked out indoors on FieldTurf. Duke had one player who was at the NFL Scouting Combine: Ross Cockrell, CB (5-foot-11 3/4, 190 pounds) — Cockrell ran the 40-yard dash in 4.46 and 4.50 seconds. He did the short shuttle in 4.20 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.92 seconds. He had a 39-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-5 broad jump. He performed 12 lifts of 225 pounds on the bench press. Cockrell had a really good workout. He was very smooth and fluid in coverage, with the only negative being that he dropped two possible interceptions in the drills.Filed under: Pro Days Tagged: Duke, […]

Browns | Will take a look at two QB prospects

The Cleveland Browns will conduct private workouts with Eastern Illinois QB Jimmy Garoppolo and Georgia QB Aaron Murray before the 2014 NFL Draft. General manager Ray Farmer, head coach Mike Pettine, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains will attend the workouts.

Footballguys View: The Browns have both a late first and early second round pick, so they can afford to wait for a second-tier quarterback prospect if they prefer the risk/reward of one of those players over the top tier this year.

Jason Bromley of Syracuse could be fifth- or sixth-round pick

There were 21 NFL teams represented — a contingent that included a defensive line coach from the Philadelphia Eagles — at Syracuse’s pro day on Wednesday, when 12 players worked out indoors on FieldTurf. Jason Bromley, DT (6-foot-3 3/8, 307 pounds) — Bromely ran the 40-yard dash in 4.97 and 4.98 seconds. He did the three-cone drill in 7.88 seconds, and stood on the rest of his numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine. Bromley is a very good athlete who moves around really well, but does have a tendancy to play a bit too upright. He is probably a fifth- to sixth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Jerome Smith, RB (5-10 3/8, 226) — Smith ran the 40 in […]

Buccaneers | Lovie Smith to attend Johnny Manziel pro day

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith will attend Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel’s pro day Thursday, March 27. ‘I had time to watch quite a few games, had a chance to watch him a lot,’ Smith said. ‘To be able to talk to people that you trust that know each player, you use every tool you can to make an evaluation, not just on that player but all players. I want to see how he handles a different environment. He’s played in front of big crowds, but he hasn’t had to perform on one day like … this is a big day for him coming up.’

Browns | Johnny Manziel will work out

The Cleveland Browns will conduct a private workout with Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel before the 2014 NFL Draft. General manager Ray Farmer, head coach Mike Pettine, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains will attend the workout.

Footballguys View: The Browns have been quiet about this class of quarterback since changing over their head coach and front office early in the offseason, but they have to thoroughly workout the contenders to be sure that they aren’t passing over a rare chance to get a viable NFL starting quarterback through the draft. The new CBA makes the rookie salaries so attractive for a quarterback, even in the early first round.
