Giants | Josh Freeman practice struggles

Updating a previous report, free-agent QB Josh Freeman (Giants) lined up the offense incorrectly in New York Giants’ practice Thursday, May 29, and was pulled immediately before the play was ever run. Freeman was released Friday, May 30.

Footballguys View: Freeman’s fall from grace has been quite fall. The former first-round pick has now bounced from three different teams in one year. He was always a bad fit for the new system under Ben McAdoo. Freeman was never known for his work ethic or discipline which made him a bad fit for renowned disciplinarian Tom Coughlin. He might get a chance somewhere else if QB injuries happen in training camp.

Giants | Backup QB role Ryan Nassib’s to lose

The New York Giants appear to be giving QB Ryan Nassib every opportunity to win the backup quarterback job. Nassib looked shaky in practice Thursday, May 29.

Footballguys View: Nassib is going to compete with Curtis Painter to be the primary backup behind Eli Manning. Fantasy owners who think Nassib could develop into a QB of the future for the Giants should watch his progress closely in training camp.

Giants | TEs will be expected to do a little bit of everything

If New York Giants’ practice Thursday, May 29, was any indication of how the team will utilize their tight ends, expect them to line up in multiple spots on the field and be asked to do a little bit of everything. TE Adrien Robinson was on the line of scrimmage one play, the next TE Larry Donnell was lined up as a wide receiver, and on the next play TE Xavier Grimble was in the backfield as an H-back.

Footballguys View: Robinson is likely the starting tight end this year. The team hasn’t had a good tight end that was fantasy relevant since Martellus Bennett moved on to the Bears in free agency.

Giants | First impression of offense

New York Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo’s West Coast system was on display Thursday, May 29. The majority of plays included a three-wide receiver set. Expect plenty of screen passes and quick-timing, horizontal pass patterns, with three-step drops from the quarterback.

Footballguys View: We’re excited about the Giants offense this year. They had grown stale under former OC Kevin Gilbride, and now we could see a more exciting product. This means fantasy owners could find value from guys like QB Eli Manning. Currently Manning’s ADP is QB20 (13.03), and he could outperform that position in this new offense. He makes for an intriguing QB2 for your fantasy team.

Saints | Victor Butler ready to contribute

New Orleans Saints LB Victor Butler (knee) is healthy and focused on carving out a role to help the Saints’ defense, not talking about whether he will start or come off the bench. Butler missed the entire 2013 season after tearing his left ACL. Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan lured Butler to the Saints along with him from the Cowboys last year and is excited to finally see what Butler can do to contribute to the Saints’ defense.
