Redskins | Joe Gibbs backs team name

Retired Washington Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs said during an interview at NASCAR’s Quaker State 400 race in Kentucky that he feels the team’s nickname is a source of pride. ‘Never once did I hear anybody ever say anything negative about the name Redskins,’ Gibbs said. ‘It was always prideful, it was courage involved. We have a song, ‘Hail to the Redskins,’ and so everything, everything, about that name has been positive for me and my past.’

Lions | Kyle Van Noy credits parents for work ethic

Detroit Lions LB Kyle Van Noy said his success on the football field has a lot to do with the work ethic his parents instilled in him off the field. ‘I would do chores before any game I would play on Saturdays,’ Van Noy said. ‘So if we had an 8 o’clock, I would do chores in the morning before, from mowing the lawn to laundry to vacuum to anything. I’ve always been dedicated to sports. But that really helped me out for the dedication part because sacrificing sleep and all that to do chores to play a game helped out a bunch.’

Patriots | Could Tom Brady play past 40?

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady could play at a high level into his 40s, according to Denver Broncos WR Wes Welker. ‘If anybody can do it, it’s Tom,’ Welker said. ‘I mean, he puts the time in, not only physically and mentally and everything else, but the way he eats, the way he sleeps, the way he does everything. He does it so he can play for a very long time. I think what he did in his 20s and 30s are going to carry on into his 40s.’

Titans | Michael Preston in the mix for fourth receiver spot

Tennessee Titans WR Michael Preston has impressed wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson and has a shot at being the team’s fourth wide receiver this year. ‘He is my jack of all trades,’ Jefferson said. ‘He knows all the positions. I can plug him in anywhere, he hustles, blocks, and is a great teammate. He has a great chance, but there is a lot of competition at this position. Right now, I’m not making any predictions, but as a coach I can’t live without him. That’s how much he means to me as a player and a person.’
