Buccaners | Tag unlikely for Doug Martin

Tampa Bay Buccaneers impending free-agent RB Doug Martin is unlikely to receive the franchise tag before free agency opens. The expected price to tag Martin for one year is in the $12 million range.

Footballguys View: There’s just no reason to pay franchise tag numbers for a running back, even one as good as Martin. There is a glut of free agent backs who can contribute, and the price for their services will be lower across the board for it. Martin is still more likely to be in Tampa this season than anywhere else.

Dolphins | Greg Jennings talks Ryan Tannehill

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill is far from an elite NFL quarterback in the eyes of WR Greg Jennings. ‘We don’t know who Ryan Tannehill is, but we want him to be this great guy, this great quarterback, this franchise quarterback, but no one has given him the freedom, the luxury, to call plays, make checks, to do the things that a great quarterback will have the opportunity to do,’ Jennings said. ‘This is no knock on Ryan. This is not Ryan’s choice. He wants to be free,’ Jennings added. ‘He wants to have that freedom, that liberty at the line of scrimmage, as most quarterbacks do. When you show your quarterback that you trust him, you give him freedom.’ ‘It’s like he’s being handcuffed. I’ve played with Brett [Favre], I’ve played with Aaron [Rodgers]. I’ve played with great quarterbacks. So you can sense, you can quickly tell if one has [greatness] or not.’

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart has big cap hit

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart carries a cap hit of $9.55 million to go with his base salary of $5 million in 2016. The Panthers would save $4 million in salary cap space if they released Stewart by June 1, but they are still expected to keep him.

Footballguys View: Stewart was very good in 2015 before getting hurt, but he still held up much longer than he had earlier in his career under any kind of workload. It is a good sign that he was effective and durable for a while under a starter’s workload, and the team doesn’t seem to be ready to make 2015 fifth-round pick Cameron Artis-Payne a bigger part of the offense.

49ers | Garrett Celek close to deal

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent TE Garrett Celek is close to finalizing a long-term deal with the 49ers, according to a source.

Footballguys View: Vernon Davis did nothing for the Broncos and both Celek and Vance McDonald were more productive in the passing game. Brent’s little brother should be a very affordable option at a position the NFL is tending to overvalue these days.
