Eagles | Sam Bradford playing for his future
Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford will likely be getting a one-year look from the team, as he is guaranteed only $4 million in the second year of his current deal. He got better as the season progressed in 2015, but the team visited the top quarterbacks in this year’s draft, and inked QB Chase Daniel to a three-year, $21 million contract as a backup plan. The team can get out of Bradford’s deal if it doesn’t work out for $22 million total, and some team is likely to sign Bradford for $4 million in 2017 if he is released, offsetting a $4 million loss.
Ravens | Mike Wallace playing for 2017 job
The Baltimore Ravens gave WR Mike Wallace $4.5 million to sign on a two-year, $11.5 million deal. All that is guaranteed is the signing bonus, so he has to play at a high level to make it to 2017, when he has an $8 million salary cap hit.
Raiders | No guarantees beyond ’16 for Donald Penn
Oakland Raiders OT Donald Penn will likely be judged on a year-to-year basis at 33 years old. He has a $5.5 million guaranteed deal for 2016, but no signing bonus and no money guaranteed for 2017 in his two-year deal signed in the offseason.
Lions | Will go year-to-year with Haloti Ngata
Detroit Lions DT Haloti Ngata re-signed for two years at $12 million, but at 32 years old the team will be keeping him on a year-to-year basis. Ngata received a $4 million signing bonus, and $2 million base, which is all guaranteed. The team can then get out of the current deal by cutting him and taking just a $2 million cap hit next offseason.
Chiefs | Derrick Johnson needs to prove himself
Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson signed a three-year, $21 million deal in the offseason with a $5.25 million signing bonus. If age catches up to him, he might not make the $2 million skill guarantee he has awaiting him in 2017. He could be a one-and-done casualty after this season.
Chargers | Brandon Mebane is one-and-done candidate
Only the first year of San Diego Chargers DT Brandon Mebane’s contract is guaranteed, giving him $2.5 million to sign and $3 million base salary. At 31, he needs to play at a high level, as the team can evaluated him after one year and potentially move on with little consequence if it doesn’t work out in 2016.
