49ers | San Francisco not ready to name QB

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) and QB Blaine Gabbert are expected to compete for the starting quarterback job during training camp, and head coach Chip Kelly said he has no idea who the starting quarterback will be in 2016.

Footballguys View: Gabbert has to be considered the frontrunner as of right now. Kaepernick is recovering from three surgeries, and he may not be near full strength until training camp. There’s also the question of whether or not Kaepernick even wants to be in San Francisco after nearly getting traded to the Broncos earlier this year.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick not cleared yet

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) has not been cleared to fully participate in offseason workouts at this point but may be able to participate during the mandatory minicamp in June.

Footballguys View: Kaepernick is recovering from three surgeries, and he may not be at full strength until training camp hits. Some thought he would get traded before the draft, but now it looks like he’s going to compete with Blaine Gabbert for the starting job with the 49ers.

Jaguars | Myles Jack signs deal

Jacksonville Jaguars second-round draft pick LB Myles Jack signed his four-year contract Friday, May 13. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys View: The Jaguars made a great move when they traded up to get Jack near the top of the second round in the 2016 NFL draft. He’s a throwback football player with the attitude and intimidating presence that scouts drool over. Jack fell in the draft due to a knee injury that may one day require microfracture surgery. Dr. James Andrews revealed that Jack does not currently need the surgery, and there’s a chance he could play for several years without needing the procedure.

Chargers | San Diego to use all RBs

San Diego Chargers RBs Melvin Gordon, Danny Woodhead and Branden Oliver will all receive playing time in 2016, according to offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt. Whisenhunt said there will be times that two of the running backs will be on the field at the same time. The team will have packages for each running back so they can put them in positions where they will succeed.

Patriots | Joey Iosefa re-signs with Pats

Free-agent RB Joey Iosefa is re-signing with the New England Patriots Friday, May 13.

Footballguys View: A seventh-round pick for the Buccaneers in 2015, Iosefa was bounced from Tampa only to end up with the Brooklyn Bolts in the FXFL and then with the Patriots. He led the team in rushing (51 yards on 14 carries) in their December win over the Titans last year, and then Iosefa was signed to a futures contract after the season was over. He was released last week, only to be brought back now. Buried on the depth chart right now, Iosefa is no lock for the final roster.

Ravens | Marlon Brown among Ravens’ cuts

Baltimore Ravens WR Marlon Brown (failed physical), DB Jermaine Whitehead, S Nick X. Perry and DE Nordly Capi were released Friday, May 13.

Footballguys View: It was all downhill for Brown after his rookie season in 2013. That year, Brown had 49 catches for 524 yards and a whopping seven touchdowns. He failed to even match those numbers combined over the next two seasons. Brown may have trouble latching on with another team.
