Saints | Austin Johnson’s job security unclear
New Orleans Saints FB Austin Johnson is the only fullback on the roster currently. He has been on and off the roster recently, and his status heading into the season hinges on whether the team decides they need a fullback.
Saints | NOLA backup RB spots up for grabs
New Orleans Saints RBs Travaris Cadet, Daniel Lasco, Marcus Murphy are likely to jockey for the spots behind RBs Mark Ingram, Tim Hightower and C.J. Spiller. Murphy and Lasco benefit special teams, with Murphy as a return man and Lasco for coverage. Cadet might also crack the roster as a runner, receiver and return man, and the final spot might come down to Cadet and Murphy and who is hotter in training camp and the preseason.
Saints | Garrett Grayson needs to show progress
New Orleans Saints QB Garrett Grayson will have to earn the No. 3 job and show some real progress to keep him roster spot. He will be slotted behind QBs Drew Brees and Luke McCown. Since the team invested a third-round pick on Grayson last year as a developmental project, he is likely to stick around.
Dolphins | Adam Gase pushing Ryan Tannehill
Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill has a new head coach in Adam Gase, and the man in charge is trying to extract more from his signal caller. Gase’s approach – besides extremely detailed teaching – also includes pushing Tannehill to his limits but also giving him more freedom than he has ever had. ‘I put a lot on (Tannehill’s) plate. It’s almost to the point where it’s probably too much this fast. I want to see where the breaking point is. He’s been doing a good job of responding,’ Gase said last week.
Titans |DeMarco Murray in better situation
Tennessee Titans RB DeMarco Murray believes Tennessee’s offensive system is a better fit for him than the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense. ‘It’s strictly downhill and that’s what I’ve been accustomed to my entire life,’ Murray said. ‘Nothing against last year or what happened, it just didn’t work out, but I’m very excited about this upcoming season.’
Bills | Tyrod Taylor may get in-season extension
Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor and the Bills are both open to an in-season extension, according to a source. Talks have been ongoing through the offseason, but an extension is not expected before the season starts.
Falcons | Matt Ryan working on feet
Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan has been working on increasing his comfort level with the offense this offseason. Ryan has worked in front of a mirror to try to get his feet in the right position to be able to throw the ball the way he wants to and to improve the timing of the play. He is able to watch his feet closely this way and can make sure everything is aligned correctly before dropping back.
Seahawks | Russell Wilson has made strides
Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson has made a clear step ahead this offseason, according to head coach Pete Carroll. ‘His command is all-time. His ability to move defenders with his eyes to set up some things, he’s consistently doing that, almost unconsciously, he’s so clued in,’ Carroll said. ‘We saw him throw the ball all over the field throughout the offseason and he’s been strong and accurate and really precise about stuff. He has had a great offseason.’
Chiefs | Receiver depth still unsettled
Kansas City Chiefs WRs Albert Wilson, Chris Conley, Rod Streater, De’Anthony Thomas and Tyreek Hill will all compete for playing time behind WR Jeremy Maclin. Head coach Andy Reid liked what he saw from Wilson and Conley during offseason workouts, though.
