Kansas City Chiefs CB Phillip Gaines (knee) fully participated in practice Wednesday, July 27, for the first time since he suffered his torn anterior cruciate ligament last season. Head coach Andy Reid said Gaines is the leading candidate to start at right cornerback this season.

Packers | No timetable for Ty Montgomery
Green Bay Packers WR Ty Montgomery (ankle) said he does not have a definite timetable for his return to practice but does say that his ankle feels great. Montgomery will have to compete for a roster spot when he is activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list.
Footballguys View: A high-ankle sprain knocked Montgomery’s rookie season off track last year. This season, Montgomery is in the mix for the Packers No.3 WR job behind Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. Jeff Janis, Davante Adams and Jared Abbrederis are all vying for the position as well. This injury puts Montgomery behind those others at this time.
Packers | Quinten Rollins says thumb is fine
Green Bay Packers CB Quinten Rollins (thumb) participated in practice Wednesday, July 27, and said his dislocated thumb is fully healed. Rollins missed most of the offseason workouts because of the injury.
Footballguys View: A second-round pick in 2015, Rollins is working with the first-team defense opposite CB Sam Shields. He’ll have to play well in camp to keep 2016 first-round pick Damarious Randall at bay.
Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick returning to New York
Free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the New York Jets Wednesday, July 27, worth $12 million. Fitzpatrick can earn an additional $3 million based on the team’s performance.
Footballguys View: Finally! The drama between Fitzpatrick and the Jets is finally done…and it’s for a price tag that we’ve been expecting for quite some time. Fitzpatrick saw all the money thrown around to guys like Sam Bradford (Eagles) and Brock Osweiler (Texans) earlier this offseason and wanted a piece of that. He didn’t get it..and never was going to get it. Now, he gets $12 million fully guaranteed with a chance to earn another $3 million in incentives. Fantasy owners should consider him a low-end QB2.
Saints | Jairus Byrd passes physical
New Orleans Saints FS Jairus Byrd (knee) was able to pass his physical when he reported for training camp, according to head coach Sean Payton.
Footballguys View: That’s a good sign for Byrd..and for the Saints. His time with New Orleans has been marred by this knee problem, and Byrd has appeared in only 17 of a possible 32 contests with the Saints. The 29-year old needs to stay healthy and start producing like he did years ago when he was with the Bills.
Saints | Keenan Lewis close to full strength
New Orleans Saints CB Keenan Lewis (hip) is close to 100% at this point, according to head coach Sean Payton.
Footballguys View: He’s close to being full strength, but the Saints started him on the PUP list to begin training camp. All signs point to him being ready for Week 1 of the regular season.
Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick talking with NYJ
Free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) is having contract negotiations with the New York Jets. The Jets are trying to reach an agreement with Fitzpatrick.
Patriots | Alan Branch injury update
Updating a previous report, New England Patriots DT Alan Branch (hip) was placed on the Non-Football Injury list because of a minor hip injury, according to a source.
Ravens | Jake Long to meet with doctor
Free-agent OT Jake Long (Falcons) is scheduled to meet with Dr. James Andrews to have his surgically repaired knee examined before the Baltimore Ravens finalized a deal with him. Long suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in 2013 and 2014.
Panthers | Luke Kuechly cleared
Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly (shoulder) has been cleared to participate in practice, but head coach Ron Rivera said Kuechly likely will be eased back into practice.
Footballguys View: He went under the knife back in February, and the team was always confident that their superstar LB would be ready for the start of camp. Here we are…and Kuechly is ready.
