NFL | Patrick Mahomes draws high praise

Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes ‘will check every box in Indy’ at the NFL Scouting Combine, according to one unnamed NFL team executive. He added that ‘everyone will be talking about (Mahomes) after the combine.’

Footballguys View: Mahomes might go off the board in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft. He’s the best Texas Tech QB to enter the NFL…for whatever that’s worth. Mahomes is more than a system QB, and we’ve heard the Texans are one of a few teams interested. He was given a second-round grade by the NFL Advisory Committee, but the fifth-year option for first-round picks could inflate his draft stock.

NFL | Mike Martz high on Cethan Carter

Nebraska TE Cethan Carter drew high praise from former NFL head coach Mike Martz, who had him on his team at the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. ‘He’s got length; he’s got juice to get up field,’ Martz said. ‘He’s got speed — not just real speed, he can change direction. Not quite like a wide receiver, but you can certainly space him out on his own at wide-out, and he’d do extremely well.’ Martz also called him ‘exceptional’ and a ‘smart guy.’

Packers | Eddie Lacy progressing well in recovery

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (ankle) ran publicly for the first time — albeit in a pool during a rehab session at the University of Alabama — since having ankle surgery a few months ago Thursday, Feb. 23.

Footballguys View: Lacy is a free agent, and the market should be lukewarm for his services. Weight problems and durability issues will keep his price low. He may not have to sign a “prove it” deal, but it’s not like Lacy is going to break the bank on the open market.

Falcons | Atlanta boasted best running back duo

Atlanta Falcons RBs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman produced the best numbers of any backfield combination in 2016. Their main production came in the endzone, tallying a combined 24 total touchdowns. Freeman finished with over 1,500 total yards, while Coleman finished just shy of 1,000 total yards.

Footballguys View: The Falcons should have more of the same going forward in 2017. Kyle Shanahan left to be the head coach of the 49ers, but new OC Steve Sarkisian is likely to keep most of the system in place.
