Texans | Tom Savage still in lead for QB job

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage is still considered the leading candidate for the starting No. 1 quarterback but will have to earn the job during training camp, according to head coach Bill O’Brien.

Footballguys View: Savage has the experience advantage over rookie DeShaun Watson. He’s a tall, strong-armed pocket passer with say-it-don’t-spray-it accuracy. Watson is simply the more exciting prospect here. He plays big in the biggest moments and is tough as nails. Watson is athletic, unafraid to challenge defenses and has quality weapons around him in the passing attack. Watson could win the starting job if he outperforms Savage in training camp and the preseason.

Rams | Nothing new with Aaron Donald contract talks

Los Angeles Rams general manager Les Snead said DT Aaron Donald is still a priority for the Rams but there is nothing new to report in terms of contract extension negotiations. Donald skipped all of the organized team activities because of his contract situation.

Footballguys View: He showed up to mandatory minicamp so as to not get fined. The Rams picked up Donald’s fifth-year option, so the team controls his rights for the next two seasons. Rather than wait, it would behoove the Rams to get an extension done with one of the best in the business.

Rams | LAR unsure about extending Trumaine Johnson

Los Angeles Rams CB Trumaine Johnson will remain a candidate for a contract extension offer, but ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez believes general manager Les Snead sounds ‘noncommittal’ in regards to getting a deal done. Snead had previously expressed a desire to wait until after the offseason program concluded to make sure Johnson was a fit for new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips’ system that asks its cornerbacks to play a lot of man coverage.
