49ers | Jaquiski Tartt agrees to extension
The San Francisco 49ers signed S Jaquiski Tartt to a two-year contract extension through the 2020 season on Friday, April 27.
Broncos | Denver eyeing QB on second day of draft?
The Denver Broncos will reportedly look at adding a quarterback such as Richmond’s Kyle Lauletta and Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph during the second or third round of the NFL Draft on Friday, April 27, according to ESPN’s Jeff Legwold.
Footballguys View: Interesting, given they could have had several different quarterbacks with their first pick and chose to pass. This may just be a developmental prospect, or it could be they are well and truly done with Paxton Lynch. It’s worth watching, as they have several needs to fill on Day 2.
Seahawks | Seattle bringing back Byron Maxwell
Free-agent CB Byron Maxwell (Seahawks) agreed to terms on a one-year contract worth up to $3 million with the Seattle Seahawks on Friday, April 27.
Footballguys View: Re-signing Maxwell isn’t going to make up for losing Richard Sherman permanently (Maxwell replaced him when Sherman was injured last season), but the Seahawks seem content to move on with lesser guys for a better price. Maxwell did OK last year so it won’t be a disaster.
NFL | Jay Cutler likely to retire
Free-agent QB Jay Cutler (Dolphins) is expected to announce his retirement from the NFL soon, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport.
Chargers | Mason Rudolph of interest to Chargers?
The Los Angeles Chargers are reportedly very interested in finding a way to land Oklahoma State QB Mason Rudolph in the second round of the NFL Draft on Friday, April 27.
Footballguys View: Rivers has been an iron man, almost never hurt, and seems to have plenty left in the tank, but Los Angeles is smart to start thinking about the long term. But with the 48th pick overall (16th pick in the second round) there’s a chance Rudolph won’t be there. How far they need to move up is a hard thing to gauge, but the Colts have back to back picks at 36 and 37 overall so that could be a target.
49ers | San Fran sends Trent Brown to Patriots
The San Francisco 49ers agreed to trade 49ers OL Trent Brown and a 2018 fifth-round pick (No. 143 overall) to the New England Patriots for a 2018 third-round pick (No. 95 overall) on Friday, April 27. The deal is pending a physical.
Footballguys View: With Mike Mcglinchey stepping up across from Joe Staley, this made sense for them. The extra third rounder will help shore up any number of needs for San Francisco.
Patriots | Trent Brown headed to New England
Updating a previous report, the New England Patriots agreed to trade a 2018 third-round pick (No. 95 overall) in exchange for San Francisco 49ers OL Trent Brown and a 2018 fifth-round pick (No. 143 overall) on Friday, April 27. The deal is pending a physical.
Footballguys View: The Niners were in position to do this in part because of the Mike Mcglinchey pick Thursday night and the Patriots are always looking to inject new blood (from an organizational standpoint). Brown should bring some needed experience to the Patriots line.
