Texans | Josh Ferguson still viewed as top candidate for RB3 role

Houston Texans RB Josh Ferguson is still regarded as the leading candidate for the team’s third running back role, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. Lamar Miller and D’Onta Foreman are locked in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.

Footballguys View: It sounds like Ferguson is in line to get some passing down work and Foreman will get early down work. Miller should get enough touches to justify his ADP, but if Foreman comes on as a runner it could muddy the waters.

Bengals | A.J. Green to get second opinion

Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green (ankle) will get a second opinion on his injured ankle. He’s not currently expected to require surgery, but he and the Bengals will get additional information before making a proper plan for his treatment.

Footballguys View: This is usually isn’t a good thing. Surgery isn’t on the table now, but Green might not have liked something about the diagnosis or felt it didn’t match what he was experiencing. This situation could change, and not for the better.

Bengals | A.J. Green expected to be sidelined 6-8 weeks

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green (ankle) is expected to be sidelined six to eight weeks after tearing ligaments in his ankle during a practice at the University of Dayton’s Welcome Stadium as part of the NFL’s 100th-anniversary celebration. He isn’t expected to be ready for the regular-season opener at the Seattle Seahawks.

Footballguys View: Green will fall out of the third round and maybe farther, a lot farther. Not only will this likely cost him games, but who knows how many games it will take to get to full speed, and the risk of re-injury. The sixth round sounds about right for where his ADP will level off.

Redskins | Alex Smith attending QB meetings

Washington Redskins QB Alex Smith (leg) has attended all of the team’s quarterbacks meetings during training camp, according to head coach Jay Gruden. ‘I think he’s just a calming influence for them,’ Gruden said of Smith. ‘He’s very supportive for each individual guy, he’ll get on them when he needs to get on them a little bit, in a fun-loving kind of way but he’s just a great presence to have in the quarterback room and we obviously welcome it whenever he wants to come in here.’
