Broncos | Justin Simmons might not hold out

Denver Broncos impending free-agent FS Justin Simmons hinted that he would be unlikely to sit out offseason workouts if the team places the franchise tag on him this offseason, which could happen if the two sides are unable to agree to a multiyear contract extension by March 10. Simmons’ former agent, Rich Hurtado, was hired by the Broncos last week and put in charge of the organization’s salary cap and contract negotiations.

Redskins | Dwayne Haskins will begin as QB1

Washington Redskins QB Dwayne Haskins will begin the era of head coach Ron Rivera as the team’s No. 1 quarterback, according to senior vice president of player development Doug Williams Friday, Feb. 7. ‘The new staff knows that Dwayne Haskins is the starting quarterback here,’ Williams said. ‘The only thing that can happen is for Dwayne to give it back to them. It’s up to him to learn the playbook, wear the coaches out. He’s got to stay at the facility until they run him out of the building. …’Dwayne has a long way to go. But like I told him, he was doing what we expected him to do. He was ascending. Hopefully the way he goes now, he keeps going up. All eyes are going to be on him. At the same time you’ve got a new coaching staff and they’re not married to him.’

Cardinals | Chandler Jones understands trade

Arizona Cardinals LB Chandler Jones says he understands why the New England Patriots traded him to the Cardinals in 2016. ‘When I spoke to Bill (Belichick) when I got traded, he told me it was best for the team; this was the best decision for our team,’ Jones recently told Jeff Howe of The Athletic. ‘At the time, I didn’t understand. That next year, they won the Super Bowl, so I did understand that was best for the team — saved money, and they actually went and won. There were no hard feelings at all. I understood it’s a business and it was what was best for the team.’
