Colts | Philip Rivers a big-time passer?

Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers in 2019 tied for second in the AFC with the Cleveland Browns’ Baker Mayfield and the Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes with 27 big-time throws (Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded throws on precise downfield passes).

Footballguys View: Rivers also made a lot of mistakes on downfield throws last year and appeared to be in decline. Hopefully a better offensive line and strong running game helps him become more efficient. Mayfield’s number is encouraging in an otherwise discouraging season. Mahomes would have led the league in this stat if he had played 16 games.

Texans | Deshaun Watson a downfield passing ace

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson led the AFC with 28 big-time throws (Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded throws on precise downfield passes) in 2019.

Footballguys View: Watson is going to have to do even more of the work on third down with DeAndre Hopkins traded to Arizona. We’ll see who emerges as his go-to target on key plays out of Will Fuller, Brandin Cooks, Randall Cobb, and Kenny Stills.

Panthers | Curtis Samuel to be used in space

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel is expected to be used in space all around the field, according to offensive coordinator Joe Brady. ‘Curtis is going to be critical to success,’ Brady said. ‘Curtis is the one that I can’t wait to see him do what he does on the field. Curtis is a playmaker. He fits the mold of what we’re looking for in this type of offense, a guy that you can utilize all around the field and get the ball in the hands and good things happen. I think you saw stuff last year that shows that he can be a big-play wide receiver, down the field. We’re getting the ball in space and I’m excited for him to take the next leap.’
