Two wide receivers with a chance to be free-agent pickups following the 2014 NFL Draft were among the 19 athletes (14 from Valdosta State and four from area small schools) who worked out at Valdosta State’s pro day on March 17. The workout was conducted outdoors on FieldTurf and in a drizzling rain. Gerald Ford, WR (6-foot-2 3/4, 223 pounds) — Ford ran the 40-yard dash in 4.60 and 4.62 seconds. A large crowd that included representatives from all 32 teams gathered for Fresno State’s pro day Thursday. No NFL head coaches were present, but each team had at least two or three reps, including the Vikings, who sent offensive coordinator Norv Turner and general manager Rick Spielman. The star of the show was undoubtedly quarterback Derek Carr, who more than likely played himself into the lower end of the first round. Carr (6-2 1/8, 215 pounds) did an exceptional job, showing off a very, very strong arm in a 72-pass workout. There was one player of note at Samford’s pro day March 13, and that was running back Fabian Truss. The workouts took place in their football stadium on a sunny, 40-degree day. Truss (5-8 5/8, 187 pounds) ran the 40-yard dash twice, and his times were a bit unusual: He ran a 4.49 against the wind and 4.53 with the wind. He also posted a 31-inch vertical and a 9-6 broad jump. He ran the short shuttle in 4.40 and the three-cone drill in 6.96. He did 16 bench presses. Jets running backs coach Anthony Lynn was among the representatives from 15 NFL teams at Alabama-Birmingham’s pro day March 13. Lynn was on hand to see Darrin Reaves (5-6 7/8, 209 pounds), who was not at the combine. Reaves ran the 40 twice in 4.59 seconds against the wind and 4.54 with the wind. He had a 39 1/2-inch vertical and a 10-3 broad jump. He ran the short shuttle in 4.54 and the three-cone drill in 7.07. He also threw the bar up 20 times. Carrier was here to see Ty Zimmerman, a defensive back who was not at the combine. Zimmerman is recovering from right labrum surgery and will work out April 28 at Kansas State.
