Representatives from four NFL teams — plus one team from the Canadian Football League (Edmonton Eskimos) — were on hand for South Alabama’s pro day on March 7. The workout was held outdoors on FieldTurf, and 14 University of South Alabama players — plus four others from area small schools — went through drills. Ross Metheny, QB (6-foot-1 3/4, 210 pounds) — Metheny ran the 40-yard dash in 4.72 and 4.65 seconds. He had a 40-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-10 broad jump. He ran the short shuttle in 4.30 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.07 seconds. Metheny went through an on-field workout that was scripted by quarterback trainer David Morris, a former backup to Eli Manning at Ole […]

Khyri Thornton of Southern Miss solidifies draft stock
Representatives from 12 NFL teams were present when Southern Mississippi held its pro day on March 7. The workout was held outdoors on FieldTurf in perfect 55-degree weather. Six players from Souther Miss worked out, plus another four former Golden Eagles players from the previous year. The most noteworthy of which was Khyri Thornton, who was the only Southern Miss player present at the NFL Scouting Combine. Thornton, a 6-foot-2 5/8, 316-pound defensive tackle, ran the 40-yard dash in 5.09 and 5.04 seconds and then kept the rest of his numbers registered at the combine. Thornton had a very good workout, which was led by a Philadelphia Eagles coach. Thornton appeared to be in great shape; he did not lose […]

Jackson State cornerback worth a look
Ten NFL teams were present at Jackson State’s pro day Thursday, when 13 players were measured and weighed but did not perform any drills. There was one notable name among the 13: Qua Cox, CB: Cox (5-9 5/8, 178 pounds) made the Senior Bowl roster, and on his pro day he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.64 and 4.65 seconds. He posted a 35-inch vertical and a 10-foot, 1-inch broad jump. He ran the short shuttle in 4.54 and the 3-cone drill in 7.43 seconds. Based on his measurables and from what was seen at the Senior Bowl, Cox looks like he’ll be a free agent.Filed under: Pro Days Tagged: Jackson State, pro day

Bradford impresses, Sutton doesn’t at ASU pro day
Representatives from all 32 teams were at Arizona State’s pro day Friday, including Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano and much of the Arizona Cardinals staff. Twenty players from Arizona State and nine former players worked out outdoors at Sun Devils Stadium. Carl Bradford, OLB: Bradford (6-1 1/8, 251 pounds) reminds a lot of people of the Ravens’ Terrell Suggs; he’s not quite in Suggs’ class, but his mannerisms and the way he plays are similar. Bradford ran the 40 in 4.68 and 4.70 seconds. He had a 4.37 short shuttle and a 7.06 3-cone drill. His arms are a bit short, at 30 1/2 inches. He looked very good in his linebacker drills Friday and will probably be a second-day choice, […]

Taylor Gabriel another small, speedy receiver to watch
Almost every pro day report I’ve done so far has included a wide receiver, which just goes to show you how many possibilities there are at the position in this draft. Many of them are shorter than you’d like, but a lot of them have great speed. Abilene Christian’s pro day Friday, which was done outdoors on FieldTurf, had another such small-but-fast receiver in Taylor Gabriel. Gabriel (5-7 1/2, 167 pounds) ran the 40 twice , against a 20 mph wind and then with the wind. He ran a 4.53 against the wind and a 4.28 with the wind, so averaging the two times out you get about a 4.41. He also had a 40-inch vertical and a 10-foot, 5-inch […]

Jimmie Ward, Jordan Lynch star at Northern Illinois pro day
Jimmie Ward was the main attraction of Northern Illinois’ pro day Friday, which drew representatives from 30 NFL teams, including the defensive backs coaches of the Colts, Giants, Lions and Bears. Ward (5-10 3/4, 197 pounds), who plays safety, was among 11 players who worked out. He didn’t run at the combine, but he posted times of 4.47 and 4.48 in the 40 on Friday. He had a 38-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot, 5-inch broad jump, as well as a 4.24-second short shuttle and 6.89-second 3-cone drill. He’s going in for surgery on his foot this week and will not be able to do anything for about six weeks. Teams will keep a close eye on how he recovers, […]

Sammy Watkins & Co. attract all 32 teams to Clemson pro day
New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan and San Francisco 49ers GM Trent Baalke were among those in attendance for Clemson’s pro day Thursday. All 32 NFL teams were on hand to watch 14 players work out indoors on FieldTurf. Here are some of the key workouts from day: Tajh Boyd, QB: Boyd (6-0 3/4, 221 pounds) kept all of his numbers from the combine. He’s fallen off a little bit in the last few months, but he had a very strong pro day, looking good moving around and completing the ball. I think he improved his draft position and has a good chance to be a second-day pick. Bashaud Breeland, CB: Breeland (5-11 3/8, 188 pounds) supposedly didn’t bring […]

NFL Who’s Who attends Ohio State pro day
Ohio State’s pro day Friday drew probably the largest group of NFL scouts and personnel since 2004. There were 31 teams there, and I’m willing to bet that the one team that was not spotted, the Redskins, probably had a guy there, too. There were general managers — Pittsburgh’s Kevin Colbert, Buffalo’s Doug Whaley and the Jets’ John Idzik among them — as well as head coaches, offensive coordinators and defensive coordinators. Rob Chudzinski, a former head coach who is now an assistant in Indianapolis, was there. Seven director of player personnels were there, including Duke Tobin of the Bengals and Rick Reiprish of the Saints. There must have been at least 50 coaches overall who were present for what […]

Isaiah Crowell works in rainy conditions
Twelve teams were present Tuesday at Alabama State’s pro day, where Isaiah Crowell was the top name among 11 players who worked out. The players performed their jumps and shuttle runs indoors, but the rest of the workouts took place outdoors, where it was rainy and cold. Crowell measured in at 5-10 3/8, which was quite a bit different from his 5-11 measurement at the combine. He was measured twice just to make sure it was correct. He stayed on his 40 time from the combine (4.57), but posted a 4.51 short shuttle and a 7.25 cone drill. I thought he had a good workout. He’s had some baggage from before his transfer from Georgia, but I think he’ll be […]
