No one from Cincinnati was at the NFL Scouting Combine, but a few of the performances at the school’s pro day Thursday really stood out. The best performance of the day was by tight end Blake Annen (6-foot-4 1/8, 247 pounds), who posted two very good times in the 40: a 4.41 and a 4.42. He also had a 34-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot broad jump. He ran the short shuttle in 4.30 seconds and the 3-cone drill in 7.19, and he threw the bar up 25 times. He had a very strong workout, both running and catching the ball. Fifteen teams attended Cincinnati’s pro day, and 16 players worked out — 14 from Cincinnati and two from other […]

Bengals DB coach watches Verrett at TCU pro day
Cincinnati Bengals defensive backs coach Vance Joseph was among those in attendance for TCU’s pro day Thursday, when a total of 21 teams were there to watch eight players work out indoors on FieldTurf. The guy they were all there to see was cornerback Jason Verrett (5-foot-9 5/8, 186 pounds), who worked out at the combine and also performed a few drills on his pro day, recording a 39 1/2-inch vertical jump and throwing the bar up 19 times. Verrett is an excellent cover corner, and the only thing that might impede him from being an All-Pro is his lack of size. One suggestion I have — and this is just a suggestion — is that he might consider working out […]

Shorter stars shine at Northern Arizona pro day
There were representatives from 12 NFL teams at Northern Arizona’s pro day Wednesday to watch 13 players work out, and two of the players caught my eye. Zach Bauman, RB: Bauman measured 5-foot-7 1/4, 194 pounds, and recorded 40 times of 4.50 and 4.57. He had a 34-inch vertical jump, and a 9-foot broad jump. He also posted times of 4.12 in the short shuttle and 6.92 in the 3-cone drill, and threw the bar up 13 times in the bench press. Bauman was a very productive four-year starter at Northern Arizona who rushed for 1,182 yards and eight touchdowns last season. His only negative is that he’s not that tall, but I think he’s a very good player, and he […]

Tiny, but speedy, Ryan Lankford could get NFL look
Representatives from 18 NFL teams were on hand to watch five players work out at Illinois’ pro day, which was held indoors on FieldTurf. Jonathan Brown, OLB (6-foot 5/8, 234 pounds) — Brown — who was at the NFL Scouting Combine — ran the 40-yard dash in 4.87 and 4.85 seconds. He had a 31 1/2-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-3 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.59 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.31 seconds. He also recorded 18 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. Brown is a likely seventh-round draft choice or free-agent pickup following the 2014 NFL Draft. Ryan Lankford, WR (5-11 1/2, 163) — Langford ran the 40 in 4.39 and 4.41 […]

Trend toward big corners works in Richardson’s favor
Representatives from 25 NFL teams — including the entire Arizona Cardinals coaching staff — were on hand to see 15 players from Arizona work out outdoors in perfect 80-degree weather. Ka’Deem Carey, RB (5-foot-9 1/4, 209 pounds) — Carey ran the 40-yard dash in 4.68 and 4.69 seconds. He had a 35-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-5 broad jump. He also had 19 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. Carey did field drills, too. However, he worked out with the wide receivers rather than doing running back drills, so his workout was good but scouts couldn’t see him work out of the backfield. Marquis Flowers, OLB (6-2 5/8, 231) — Flowers ran the 40 twice in 4.50 seconds. […]

Taylor Martinez displays exceptional athleticism
Taylor Martinez played quarterback at Nebraska — starting 43 games at the position during four seasons with the Cornhuskers — but might be a man without a position as an NFL draft hopeful. Martinez (6-foot 1/4, 201 pounds) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.45 and 4.6 seconds. He had a 39-inch vertical jump and 10-foot-9 broad jump. He had a 20-yard short shuttle time of 4.03 seconds and did the three-cone drill in 6.85 seconds. All of those numbers with the exception of the three-cone would have either been the best among quarterbacks or matched the best among quarterbacks at the NFL Scouting Combine. Martinez worked out as a quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back at Nebraska’s pro day. Some […]

Dakota Dozier’s draft stock continues to trend up
A total of 14 NFL teams — including offensive line coaches from the Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles — were on hand for Furman’s pro day to watch five Paladins players work out on FieldTurf outdoors in the cold. The player of interest was offensive tackle Dakota Dozier, who was at the NFL Scouting Combine. He stood on his numbers from the event, which were really good. Dozier just did position drills at the pro day, and Dozier’s performance has him positioned to be a second-day pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Dozier’s draft stock has risen tremendously since early in the 2013 season and continued through a very good performance at the East-West Shrine Game. Filed under: Pro Days […]

Eagles, Jets RB coaches attend Central Michigan pro day
A total of 11 players worked out in front of representatives from 10 NFL teams — including the running backs coaches from the Philadelphia Eagles (Duce Staley) and New York Jets (Anthony Lynn) — at Central Michigan’s pro day Wednesday. The workout was conducted indoors on FieldTurf. The player that the NFL running backs coaches were on hand to see work out was Zurlon Tipton, a 5-foot-11 3/4, 223-pound back who was on the 2013 Maxwell and Doak Walker Award watch lists. However, a broken ankle suffered in the season opener derailed those award hopes, and Tipton missed seven games. At Central Michigan’s pro day, Tipton ran the 40-yard dash in 4.70 and 4.73 seconds. He had a 32-inch vertical […]
