For those of you still playing in Week 17 …

Till the end: If you’re in one of those die-hard leagues where teams start players through Week 17, give Browns RB Edwin Baker a try. He was in the game on almost every offensive snap during Sunday’s loss to the Jets, and he finished with 17 carries for 64 yards and a TD. Cleveland finishes the season with a road trip to Pittsburgh, whose defense has been leaking yards and points in recent weeks. With so many starters disappointing in Week 16, maybe Baker can give you an unexpected boost to close out the year.

That Helps No One: Geno Smith goes Broadway

A lot of things have been said and written about Geno Smith this season. Let me add two more that probably haven’t been used much — if at all. Fantasy stud. That was the case on Sunday when the Jets rookie quarterback threw for 214 yards with two passing touchdowns while rushing for another 48 yards and a score in New York’s win over the Cleveland Browns. In total, it adds up to 27.36 points — more than Cam Newton, Drew Brees and Adrian Peterson. Combined. It was also a season high for the former West Virginia star in an up-and-down season that has now seen him score better than 20 points twice in the past three weeks. Week 16 KABOOM! No surprise it’s Peyton

Yes, Peyton Manning entered the Sunday night game as the leading fantasy scorer of Week 16. But this award is just as much about his 2013 season overall. Sunday, Manning threw for 400 yards and four touchdowns in a win over the Houston Texans. More importantly, that fourth touchdown gave Manning 51 touchdown tosses for the season — breaking the record set by Tom Brady in 2007. It’s a fitting honor for a season that began with Peyton tying a long-standing NFL record when he threw seven TD passes in a season-opening romp of the Baltimore Ravens. It’s not a complete surprise for a guy who is a lock for the Hall of Fame. And who knows? With Manning chasing the single-season record […]

Is a potential RB1 suddenly available on waivers?

Who? Those of you wondering why the Browns named Chris Ogbannaya the starter against Chicago, but hardly gave him the ball aren’t alone. Edwin Baker was signed off the practice squad and had six carries for 38 yards and a touchdown against the Bears. If you’re a risk-taker by heart, he should be available in a high number of leagues heading into Week 16. If this was Week 5, I’d say pick him up, then if it doesn’t work out, we’d crack a joke about it and move on. But many of you are playing in your fantasy Super Bowls. Do you really want to take that kind of risk?
