Bears | Justin Fields working out with teammate

Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields worked out with WR Marquise Goodwin earlier this week.

Footballguys View: The rookie quarterback is already getting to work. There were erroneous reports before the draft suggesting that Fields as a “last guy in, first guy out” type of quarterback but those rumblings were always hogwash. The Bears moved up in the 2021 NFL draft to get Fields, and he reminds some in the scouting community of Dak Prescott when he came out of Mississippi State years ago. The rookie will compete with Andy Dalton for the starting job this season.

Jets | Five players trying out

Free-agent WRs Trevor Davis (Washington), WR Steven Mitchell Jr. (Texans) and WR Damion Willis (Jaguars) participated in the New York Jets rookie minicamp on a tryout basis. Undrafted free-agent TE Daniel Crawford (Northern Illinois) and DT Mustafa Johnson (Colorado) also tried out for the team.

Footballguys View: Willis is the player to watch here. Undrafted out of Troy in 2019, Willis looked like a player to monitor in deep dynasty formats with the Bengals. He had two starts as a rookie but did not make the team in 2020. Instead, Willis was picked up by the Browns and then released with a failed physical designation. He signed with the Jaguars practice squad late last year and spent about a month on the team. We’ll see if he can impress enough at this tryout to earn a chance at a spot with the Jets in the offseason.

Panthers | Dan Morgan hired as assistant GM

Buffalo Bills team executive Dan Morgan on Saturday, May 8, was hired as the Carolina Panthers’ assistant general manager.

Footballguys View: Morgan is back with the Panthers, this time in the front office. A first-round pick in the 2001 NFL draft, Morgan played with the Panthers through the 2007 season. After retiring, Morgan spent almost seven years as the Director of Pro Personnel for the Seahawks. In Seattle, he worked with new Panthers GM Scott Fitterer. Morgan has spent the last three years with the Buffalo Bills.
