NFL | Davis Mills has had multiple surgeries

Stanford QB Davis Mills has undergone four surgeries on his left knee but has not had any of them since 2018.

Footballguys View: His left knee has been a problem for Mills dating back to his senior year in high school. He ended up wearing a bulky brace on his left knee for most of his career at Stanford. With only 11 career starts and plenty of issues with decision making – especially under duress – there are quite a few concerns with Mills. He should still be a Day 2 or early Day 3 draft pick.

NFL | Kyle Trask recovered from injury

Florida QB Kyle Trask finished the 2020 college football season with a high ankle sprain but has recovered from the injury. He was not able to start running again until March.

Footballguys View: Trask was supposed to participate at the Senior Bowl earlier this year but could not due to this injury. He’s back to running and on track to be ready for offseason work and training camp in the NFL. Once thought of as a potential first-round quarterback, Trask is now likely to go in Day 2 or even early Day 3 of the NFL draft.

NFL | Trevor Lawrence throwing

Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence (shoulder) is recovering from shoulder surgery but did resume throwing a few weeks ago.

Footballguys View: Good news for Lawrence here. It’s his non-throwing shoulder but it’s still good that he’s able to get out there and toss the pigskin around. He’ll be the no.1 pick in the 2021 NFL draft to the Jacksonville Jaguars. They’ll likely ease him into action with the idea that he’ll be fully ready by training camp.

Broncos | Drew Lock will need to compete

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock has a fan in new general manager George Paton, but Paton quickly added that the team still plans on bringing in outside competition for the starting job this offseason. ‘We do like Drew Lock,’ Paton said at a news conference Thursday, April 22. ‘What we don’t want to do is force (competition). We still have time. There’s a trade market. We still have the draft. We’re going to be patient … not force it. But we do want competition’

Footballguys View: Zero surprise here. Lock was one of the worst starting quarterbacks last year and the team is looking for an upgrade. That will come through a veteran via trade (like Teddy Bridgewater) or via the first round in the 2021 NFL draft (Justin Fields anyone?). Either way, Lock will not be handed the job like he was last year. Let’s see if he can respond to the added pressure.

Bills | Travis Etienne an ideal fit in Buffalo

Clemson RB and 2021 NFL Draft prospect Travis Etienne would be an ideal first-round choice for the Buffalo Bills with the No. 30 overall pick, according to ESPN beat reporter Marcel Louis-Jacques. Etienne is a ‘perfect fit’ Louis-Jacques writes. ‘Though it’s difficult to argue the value of a running back versus a cornerback or defensive end at pick No. 30, a back could provide a more immediate impact for a team ready to win now,’ he adds.

Footballguys View: Etienne has speed, speed and more speed to his game. He could mix into the RBBC with the Bills with guys like Zack Moss and Devin Singletary. In fact, Etienne has a similar game to former Bills running back (former Clemson back too) C.J. Spiller.

Seahawks | Rashaad Penny ready to roll

Seattle Seahawks RB Rashaad Penny (knee) is healthy heading into the 2021 season, and RB Chris Carson believes he and Penny can form an effective tandem. ‘We both bring different things to the game, different attributes, but we complement each other so well,’ Carson said. ‘I just feel like his limit is ridiculous once he starts getting his feet wet in the game. I think it’ll be something special.’

Footballguys View: Penny is ready to roll but will he stay ready? He’s flashed a bit of talent during his pro career, but the former first-round pick has rarely stayed healthy for that long. Carson returns to likely lead the way in the backfield with Penny playing as a reserve for the Seahawks.
