Lions | Detroit backup RBs could be busy

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah wants to be the every-down back, but head coach Jim Caldwell indicated Tuesday, Aug. 30, he will keep his running-back-by-committee approach, meaning plenty of reps could be in the offing for RBs Theo Riddick, Zach Zenner and Dwayne Washington, in that order. ‘I think you have to spread it out a little bit,’ Caldwell said.

Lions | Ameer Abdullah expects to carry load

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah reiterated Wednesday, Aug. 31, that he expects to be the team’s every-down back this season, which would mean working in the base three-receiver set and on third downs, as well as in goal-line packages, too. However, head coach Jim Caldwell said Tuesday, Aug. 30, he does not plan to change from his running-back-by-committee approach. ‘I think you have to spread it out a little bit,’ Caldwell said. ‘Backs take a lot of hits in the ball game, and so I don’t anticipate (we have) that kind of a guy that gets 30 carries in a ball game. I don’t perceive that. Even though maybe it could happen, it wouldn’t happen very often.’

Cowboys | Tony Romo likely to miss more time

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) will be on the 53-man roster this weekend, but it doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be on the roster for Week 1. Team officials continue to decide whether to place him on the Injured Reserve/Designated to Return list meaning the earliest he could return is Nov. 6. ‘We’re certainly getting our hands around it,’ executive vice president Stephen Jones said Wednesday, Aug. 31. ‘We need to make that decision obviously sometime later in the weekend.’
